🌿 Pennisetum orientale 'Flamingo' (Oriental Fountain Grass)
Pennisetum 'Flamingo' is a graceful, compact ornamental grass prized for its soft, arching plumes flushed with delicate pink as they mature. Emerging in mid-summer, the feathery flowers float above slender green foliage, creating movement and softness in sunny borders. Its drought-tolerant nature and airy form make it ideal for relaxed, naturalistic planting styles and coastal gardens.
Specifications:
Height: 70–90cm
Spread: 60cm
Flowering: July to September ☀️🍂
Position: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained; thrives in sandy, stony, or chalky soils
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Pennisetum 'Flamingo' loves the island’s dry, free-draining soils and benefits from full exposure to sun and gentle coastal breezes. Mulch lightly in late autumn to protect roots in colder inland spots. In exposed coastal gardens, this grass moves beautifully with the wind, adding texture and softness.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants for Pennisetum 'Flamingo'
1. Achillea millefolium 'Summer Fruits Lemon'
The pastel lemon blooms of Achillea harmonise perfectly with the soft pink plumes of Pennisetum, creating a delicate, summery palette.
2. Gaura lindheimeri 'The Bride'
The airy, butterfly-like flowers of Gaura dance through the fine plumes of Pennisetum, enhancing the feeling of movement and lightness.
3. Salvia 'Caradonna'
The vertical, dark purple spikes of Salvia add structure and a colour contrast to the flowing softness of Pennisetum.
4. Verbena bonariensis
Tall, see-through stems of Verbena add vertical rhythm and continue the naturalistic style, blending perfectly with Pennisetum’s soft plumes.
5. Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant'
The lavender-blue flowers of Nepeta provide a soothing carpet beneath the waving plumes, cooling the palette and extending the flowering season.
🌟 Extra Tip from The Green Standard:
Pennisetum 'Flamingo' works brilliantly in groups of three or five plants, repeated along a border to create a flowing, meadow-like effect.
