🌿 Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’
A charming, cottage-garden favourite, Achillea ptarmica ‘The Pearl’ produces clusters of double white, button-like flowers that resemble miniature pom-poms. Blooming from early summer through to autumn, it brings brightness and texture to any border. Unlike most yarrow, ‘The Pearl’ has a soft, almost meadow-like quality — making it perfect for relaxed planting schemes and wildflower-style gardens. It's also excellent for cutting and drying.
Specifications:
Height: 45–60cm
Spread: 45–60cm
Flowering: June to September 🌼
Position: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerant of most soils including clay and chalk
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Well suited to the island’s varied soils, including damper areas where typical yarrows may struggle. ‘The Pearl’ thrives in full sun but copes with partial shade, making it a useful addition for mixed borders, edge-of-woodland planting, or less exposed coastal gardens. Great for adding movement and softness while supporting pollinators.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
1. Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’
Soft blue spires and aromatic foliage create a dreamy pairing with the bright whites of ‘The Pearl’.
2. Salvia ‘Nachtvlinder’
Deep violet blooms create a striking contrast that anchors the airy blooms of Achillea.
3. Geranium ‘Max Frei’
Low-growing, tidy foliage makes a perfect underplanting for ‘The Pearl’, adding depth and extended bloom time.
4. Geum ‘Pink Petticoats’
The soft blush of Geum flowers complements the white blooms and extends flowering through summer.
5. Verbena officinalis ‘Bampton’
Add texture and movement while supporting bees — this combination thrives in naturalistic planting schemes.
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Cut back spent stems after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering. Its spreading habit makes it a good informal ground cover — ideal for filling gaps or softening the front of borders.
