Aster × frikartii ‘Farncombe Lilac’
A refined and long-flowering perennial, Aster ‘Farncombe Lilac’ produces masses of soft lilac daisy-like flowers with golden centres from midsummer right through to the first frosts. Its upright, bushy habit and mildew-resistant foliage make it a reliable performer for the front to middle of sunny borders.
This cultivar brings a lightness and subtle charm to mixed plantings and is a magnet for bees and butterflies. It blends beautifully with ornamental grasses and late-flowering perennials, making it a staple in wildlife-friendly and naturalistic designs.
Specifications:
Height: 60–70 cm
Spread: 45–60 cm
Flowering: July to October
Position: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile
Maintenance: Deadhead to encourage further blooms. Cut back to the base in late autumn or early spring
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Performs reliably in sunny coastal gardens, tolerating the Island’s light soils and salt-laden winds. Best in open beds with good air circulation to avoid late-season mildew. Drought-tolerant once established and ideal for extending floral colour well into autumn.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
Salvia greggii ‘Blue Note’ – Rich purple contrast and long flowering overlap
Achillea millefolium ‘Fruit Bowl Mix’ – Soft, flat-topped flowers for textural contrast
Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’ – Adds gentle movement and softness at the back
Geranium ‘Max Frei’ – Dense mounding form at the base for foliage and colour
Sedum ‘Iceberg’ – Succulent texture and late-season structure to complement the asters
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Plant in groups of three or more for a soft, cloud-like effect. Ideal for extending seasonal interest and supporting pollinators when other summer flowers begin to fade.
