Baptisia australis ‘Caspian Blue’
A statuesque perennial with upright spires of rich indigo-blue flowers above handsome blue-green foliage. Beloved by bees and admired for its architectural form, it brings structure and elegance to early summer borders. As the flowers fade, ornamental seedpods form, carrying the display into late summer and autumn.
‘Caspian Blue’ thrives in sunny, well-drained soils and forms a long-lived, shrub-like clump. Once established it is exceptionally drought tolerant and is best left undisturbed, rewarding with decades of reliable growth and seasonal interest.
Specifications:
• Height: 90–120cm
• Spread: 90–100cm
• Flowering: May to June
• Position: Full sun
• Soil: Well-drained, light to medium, not overly rich
• Maintenance: Cut back old stems in late winter or early spring before new growth appears; avoid moving as it resents disturbance
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
‘Caspian Blue’ is perfectly suited to the island’s chalk and sandy soils, where its drought resistance is a real asset. It thrives in exposed, sunny borders and coastal gardens, bringing structure and long-lasting presence with little maintenance.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
• • Echinacea purpurea – Bold daisy blooms that carry colour through summer and attract butterflies
• • Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – Spires of deep violet flowers that extend the season and enrich the palette
• • Achillea millefolium – Flat umbels in warm tones to contrast with Baptisia’s vertical form
• • Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponytails’ – Soft, feathery texture that complements the plant’s upright habit
• • Ammi majus – Airy white umbels that add lightness and movement among bold perennials
• • Verbena bonariensis – Tall, see-through stems that bring vertical rhythm and constant pollinator appeal
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Allow Baptisia time to establish and avoid moving it once planted. Pair with airy grasses and long-flowering companions for a border that balances structure with natural flow.
