Catananche caerulea

A delicate, drought-tolerant perennial with papery lavender-blue flowers that bring a light, airy feel to sunny planting.

Often called Cupid’s dart, Catananche caerulea produces soft blue, thistle-like flowers with a silvery sheen, held on slender stems above fine, grey-green foliage. The blooms have a papery texture, almost like everlasting flowers, and are loved by pollinators. It flowers over a long period through summer, adding movement and a natural, slightly wild look to borders.

It forms a loose, clump-forming plant, typically reaching around 60–80cm tall with a similar spread. Best in full sun and well-drained soil, it thrives in poorer, lighter soils and is very drought tolerant once established. It dislikes heavy, wet ground, especially in winter, but will often self-seed lightly in the right conditions.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range

  • Stipa tenuissima, fine grass that enhances the movement and softness

  • Salvia ‘Caradonna’, upright purple spikes for contrast and structure

  • Erigeron ‘Lavender Lady’, airy daisies that complement the relaxed feel

  • Eryngium planum ‘Fluela’, adds a tougher, architectural blue contrast

  • Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’, flat flower heads that sit well with the looser form
