Cephalaria gigantea

A magnificent, towering perennial with soft, primrose-yellow pincushion flowers held high on slender stems. Its airy, graceful blooms float above borders, creating a sense of movement and lightness while drawing in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators all summer long.

This tall, architectural plant thrives in sunny, free-draining soils and is ideal for the back of a border, where its height and elegant habit make a striking statement. Despite its stature it has a delicate presence, weaving easily among other perennials and grasses without dominating.

Specifications:

• Height: 200–250cm

• Spread: 90–100cm

• Flowering: June to August

• Position: Full sun

• Soil: Well-drained, light to moderately fertile

• Maintenance: Cut back flowered stems after blooming; may require discreet staking in exposed sites

🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:

Cephalaria gigantea thrives in the island’s free-draining soils and open, sunny conditions. Its resilience to wind and height make it a fine choice for exposed coastal gardens, where it brings vertical interest and attracts a wealth of pollinators through the summer months.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

• • Verbena bonariensis – Tall, airy stems that echo Cephalaria’s lightness and extend the season

• • Stipa tenuissima ‘Ponytails’ – Soft grasses that add movement and texture at the base

• • Echinacea purpurea – Bold daisies for mid-height colour contrast

• • Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’ – Upright violet spires for depth and continuity

• • Achillea millefolium – Flat umbels in warm shades that balance the airy blooms

• • Gaura lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies’ – Dancing white flowers to keep borders lively

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:

Plant Cephalaria near grasses or sturdy companions to create natural support and enhance its airy, meadow-like effect in the border.
