Crocosmia ‘George Davidson’
(Montbretia)

Bright, cheerful, and dependable, Crocosmia ‘George Davidson’ lights up the late summer border with soft golden-yellow blooms held on arching stems above sword-shaped green foliage. Flowering from midsummer into early autumn, it offers a warm, uplifting glow that pairs beautifully with cooler tones or other hot-coloured companions.

More compact than taller crocosmia cultivars, it’s ideal for middle-border planting, gravel gardens, or informal cottage-style schemes. Loved by bees and butterflies, and equally appreciated for its architectural structure.

Specifications:

  • Height: 60–75 cm

  • Spread: 40–60 cm

  • Flowering: July to September

  • Position: Full sun to light shade

  • Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerates lighter soils once established

  • Maintenance: Cut back after flowering; lift and divide clumps every few years in spring to prevent overcrowding

Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Well suited to the island’s mild climate and well-drained soils, especially in sunny coastal gardens. Crocosmias like ‘George Davidson’ cope well with sea breeze and summer dryness, but benefit from mulching in autumn to protect the corms.

🌿Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Salvia ‘Caradonna’ – Deep purple spires make a stunning contrast to the golden flowers

  • Erigeron karvinskianus – Soft daisies to edge borders and blend beautifully beneath

  • Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’ – Feather-soft movement to echo crocosmia’s arching form

  • Achillea millefolium ‘Paprika’ – A warm-toned partner with flat-topped blooms

  • Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ – Cool lavender blue foliage and flowers provide visual balance

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
For the best display, plant corms in spring in groups of 5–7, spaced 10–15 cm apart. Avoid overly rich soil to prevent lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
