Epimedium grandiflorum ‘Lilafee’

A graceful shade perennial with delicate violet flowers and attractive foliage.

Epimedium grandiflorum ‘Lilafee’, also known as the Fairy Wings or Barrenwort, brings an enchanting touch to spring borders. In April and May, dainty spurred flowers of soft violet-purple dance above a mound of fresh bronze-flushed foliage. As the season progresses, the leaves mature to rich green, forming a neat carpet that helps suppress weeds. Pollinators love the early nectar, and the finely textured foliage remains decorative well into autumn.

This hardy perennial thrives in partial to full shade, particularly in moist, humus-rich soils. It is excellent for underplanting beneath deciduous shrubs or trees, where it enjoys shelter and protection. Compact and clump-forming, ‘Lilafee’ slowly spreads to create an elegant groundcover that brightens darker corners of the garden.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range

  • Pulmonaria ‘Opal’ – soft sky-blue flowers and silvered leaves

  • Pulmonaria ‘Bertram Anderson’ – violet-blue flowers and speckled foliage

🌟 The Green Standard Tip

For the best spring display, cut back the old foliage in late winter before the new growth emerges. This refreshes the plant and shows off the delicate flowers to their full effect.
