Eryngium planum ‘Fluela’

A striking sea holly with shimmering steel-blue flowers that bring bold texture and pollinator activity to sunny borders.

Branched stems carry clusters of spiky, thistle-like flower heads in brilliant metallic blue, surrounded by spiny bracts that give the plant its distinctive architectural look. The colour intensifies in full sun, creating a dramatic contrast against softer planting. Bees and other pollinators flock to the nectar-rich blooms, and the flowers also dry beautifully for arrangements.

Eryngium ‘Fluela’ thrives in full sun and sharply drained soil, performing best in sandy or gravelly conditions. It forms upright clumps that add height and structure to prairie-style borders, gravel gardens and coastal planting schemes. Once established it is extremely drought tolerant and low maintenance, making it ideal for dry, sunny spots.

🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting
Sea hollies are perfectly suited to the Isle of Wight’s coastal climate. They cope well with wind, salt air and dry soils, making them a reliable choice for sunny island gardens.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range

  • Verbena bonariensis, tall airy purple flowers that weave beautifully through the spiky stems

  • Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, soft mounds of blue flowers that contrast with the structural blooms

  • Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’, flat flower heads that complement the dry, sunny planting style

  • Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, upright ornamental grass that adds movement and height

🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Leave some flower heads standing after flowering. They provide winter structure in the garden and can also be cut and dried for striking arrangements indoors.
