Fuchsia fulgens

A striking and unusual fuchsia with long tubular scarlet flowers that bring bold colour and an exotic feel to the garden.

Fuchsia fulgens produces clusters of slender scarlet-red tubular blooms that hang gracefully from tall stems. The vivid flowers appear through summer and into autumn, creating a dramatic display that stands out beautifully against the large soft green foliage. Its distinctive flowers also attract bees and other pollinators.

This vigorous species prefers a sunny or lightly shaded position in fertile, well-drained soil. It forms a tall, leafy plant over time and works well towards the middle or back of borders, particularly in sheltered gardens where it can enjoy warmth and protection from cold winds.

Specifications:

  • Type: Tender perennial / deciduous shrub

  • Position: Sun or partial shade

  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil

  • Height: Approx. 1.5–2 m

  • Spread: Approx. 1–1.5 m

  • Flowering: Summer to autumn

  • Pollinators: Attractive to bees

Note for Isle of Wight planting:
In sheltered Isle of Wight gardens Fuchsia fulgens can grow very well, particularly in a warm border or against a wall where it is protected from strong winds and frost. In colder winters it may die back but will often regrow from the base in spring.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, soft lavender-blue flowers that contrast with the bright red blooms

  • Salvia ‘Chalk White’, elegant white spikes that brighten the planting

  • Salvia ‘Royal Velours’, deep burgundy flowers that add richness to the border

  • Erigeron karvinskianus, airy daisies that soften the front of borders

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Mulch around the base in autumn to help protect the roots through winter and encourage strong new growth the following spring.
