Hakonechloa macra

An elegant Japanese forest grass bringing soft movement, fresh green colour and texture to shady planting.

Hakonechloa macra forms beautiful cascading mounds of slender, arching green leaves, creating a wonderfully soft, flowing effect. Its foliage takes on warm golden and bronze tones in autumn before dying back for winter. Small, delicate flower panicles appear in late summer, although this grass is grown primarily for its exceptional foliage and graceful form.

Perfect for partial shade, Hakonechloa thrives in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil and is particularly effective beneath shrubs, along paths or spilling gently over the edge of a border. It is slow growing and well behaved, gradually forming a substantial clump without becoming invasive.

🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting

A lovely choice for the Island's shadier gardens, particularly sheltered borders, woodland-style planting and north or east-facing positions. On the Isle of Wight's lighter, drier soils, incorporate plenty of organic matter and mulch around the plant to help retain moisture. Avoid very hot, exposed positions where the foliage can scorch or the soil dries rapidly.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range

  • Fatsia japonica – bold evergreen foliage makes a dramatic backdrop for Hakonechloa's fine, arching leaves.

  • Anemone praecox – adds elegant late-season flowers above the softly mounded grass.

  • Geranium ‘Rozanne’ – its long-flowering violet-blue blooms can weave beautifully around the edge of Hakonechloa in brighter partial shade.

  • Euphorbia purpurea – dark purple foliage provides excellent colour contrast and shares its preference for sheltered partial shade.

  • Camellia ‘Dr King’ – Hakonechloa makes an attractive, naturalistic underplanting beneath established camellias.

  • Fatsia ‘Spider’s Web’ – the large, variegated leaves create a particularly striking foliage combination with Hakonechloa's fine green blades.

🌟 The Green Standard Tip

Plant Hakonechloa where its natural cascading habit can really be seen, beside steps, at the front of a raised border or along a path is ideal. Rather than dotting single plants around a border, try planting three together to develop a generous, flowing mound that looks particularly beautiful when the leaves move in the breeze.
