Iris ‘Carnaby’

A striking tall bearded iris with bold bicolour blooms that bring dramatic contrast to late spring borders.

Iris ‘Carnaby’ produces large flowers with creamy white standards above rich purple falls, each edged with a crisp white margin that makes the colouring stand out beautifully. The strong contrast and classic iris form give this variety real presence in the garden, with blooms rising elegantly above upright fans of sword-like foliage.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil where the rhizomes can bask in warmth. Plants gradually form neat clumps and return reliably each year, making them ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and cottage-style planting where drainage is excellent.

Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Bearded irises perform particularly well in Isle of Wight gardens where sunny conditions and free-draining soils suit them perfectly. Plant rhizomes where they can enjoy plenty of warmth and good drainage for reliable flowering each spring.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, soft lavender-blue flowers that spill around the base of borders

  • Stachys byzantina, silvery foliage that highlights the purple iris blooms

  • Erigeron karvinskianus, delicate daisies perfect for the front of sunny borders

  • Salvia sclarea ‘Alba’, tall airy white flowers that add height and contrast

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Plant iris rhizomes so the top sits just above the soil surface in a sunny position. Good drainage and plenty of warmth will keep plants healthy and flowering strongly year after year.
