Iris ‘Mer du Sud’
A dramatic tall bearded iris with rich, velvety blue flowers that make a real statement in late spring.
Iris ‘Mer du Sud’ produces large, ruffled blooms in deep navy blue tones, creating a bold and elegant display above upright fans of sword-like foliage. The striking flowers add strong colour and structure to borders and are a favourite with visiting pollinators. Their classic iris form also makes them excellent for cutting and bringing indoors.
This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, where the rhizomes can soak up warmth. Plants gradually form neat clumps and return reliably each year, making them perfect for sunny borders, gravel gardens, or warm sheltered spots where drainage is excellent.

Bearded irises thrive in the Isle of Wight’s sunny, free-draining gardens. Plant rhizomes where they can enjoy plenty of warmth and light, and they will reward you with reliable flowering each spring.
Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
Salvia sclarea ‘Alba’ – airy white spires that brighten deep blue tones
Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ – soft lavender-blue flowers loved by pollinators
Erigeron karvinskianus – delicate daisies to soften the front of borders
Achillea ‘Terracotta’ – warm sunset tones for a striking contrast
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Plant iris rhizomes so the top sits just above the soil surface and receives plenty of sun. Good drainage is key to keeping plants healthy and flowering well year after year.
