Justicia rizzinii syn. Jacobinia pauciflora

A charming and slightly unusual winter-flowering plant that brings colour to the garden when little else is in bloom.

Jacobinia pauciflora produces clusters of slender tubular flowers in warm coral-red shades tipped with bright yellow. These distinctive blooms appear from late winter into early spring, creating a welcome splash of colour during the colder months. The glossy green foliage forms a neat mound, and the unusual flowers make it a real talking point in the garden.

This compact shrubby perennial prefers a bright, sheltered position in well-drained soil. It works beautifully in containers or warm protected borders where it can be enjoyed up close during the winter flowering season. In mild coastal gardens it can prove surprisingly resilient and will return each year with its cheerful display.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Erigeron karvinskianus, airy daisies that provide months of soft flowering later in the year

  • Salvia ‘Chalk White’, elegant white flower spikes that brighten the border in summer

  • Salvia ‘Royal Velours’, rich burgundy flowers that follow later in the season

  • Achillea ‘Terracotta’, warm sunset tones that carry colour through summer

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
A sunny wall or sheltered courtyard helps protect plants through winter and encourages reliable flowering each year. Growing in a container also allows the plant to be moved if severe frost is forecast.
