Lamium galeobdolon ‘Variegatum’ (Variegated Yellow Archangel)
A brilliant groundcover for brightening shady spaces, this Lamium forms a shimmering carpet of green leaves splashed with silver, topped in spring with soft yellow flowers. The foliage almost glows in low light, making it perfect for lifting darker corners of the garden, while the flowers provide an early nectar source for bees just waking up for the season.
It’s a really reliable, low-maintenance plant that thrives where others struggle, especially in dry shade under trees or along hedges. It spreads steadily to form a dense mat, helping to suppress weeds and cover bare soil, but it’s worth giving it space as it can travel once established. It copes well with poor soils and root competition, and only needs the occasional trim to keep it in check.
Height: 15–25cm
Spread: 60cm+
Flowering: April to June
Position: Partial shade to full shade
Soil: Any, including dry and poor soils
Maintenance: Low
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
This is ideal for those dry, tricky spots we often get on the island, especially under trees or in sheltered shady corners. It will happily cope with lighter soils and coastal conditions, but keep an eye on it as it can spread quickly in the right conditions.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
Erigeron ‘Lavender Lady’, soft, airy flowers to soften the edges where shade meets sun
Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, a hazy blue contrast for brighter adjoining areas
Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, upright structure to rise through the groundcover
Geum ‘Fireball’, warm orange tones that work beautifully with the yellow flowers
Brunnera macrophylla, bold silver foliage to echo and enhance the leaf interest
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Use this as a living mulch under shrubs or trees to quickly fill space and create a lush, established feel with very little effort.
