Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’
A bold, architectural grass with striking horizontal golden bands across its green leaves.
Miscanthus ‘Zebrinus’, often called zebra grass, brings height, movement and real drama to a border. Its upright leaves are marked with unusual creamy-yellow stripes, giving it interest long before the soft, feathery flower plumes appear in late summer. The plumes are loved by wildlife for shelter and seed interest, while the foliage gives a beautiful rustle and shimmer in the breeze.
It thrives in a sunny, open position with well-drained soil, forming a strong clump over time without running. It is brilliant as a statement plant, towards the back of a border, or used with late-season perennials for a natural, prairie-style look.
Specifications:
Height: Around 1.5–2m
Spread: Around 1m
Flowering: Late summer to autumn
Position: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil
Maintenance: Leave standing over winter for structure, then cut back hard in late winter or early spring
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
A great choice for sunny island gardens, especially where you want height, movement and late-season structure. Best in a sheltered spot if very exposed to strong coastal winds, as the tall stems can catch the weather.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range
Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ – golden late-summer colour to echo the warm bands in the grass
Sedum ‘Matrona’ – strong, upright autumn structure with dusky pink flowerheads
Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ – rich blue flowers for a striking contrast at the front
Verbena bonariensis – airy purple stems that weave beautifully through grasses
Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ – warm coppery flowers for a bold late-season border
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Give it room to shine, this is not a small filler grass. Plant it where the low autumn sun can catch the striped leaves and turn the whole plant golden.
