Origanum ‘Bristol Cross’

A beautiful ornamental oregano with delicate hop-like flowers that bring soft colour and movement to sunny borders.

Origanum ‘Bristol Cross’ produces arching stems of papery pink bracts that resemble tiny hops, creating an elegant cascading effect through summer. The soft pink tones deepen as the season progresses, while the aromatic foliage releases a pleasant scent when brushed. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, and the leaves are also edible with a light oregano flavour.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, particularly in lighter or gravelly ground. Its relaxed, trailing habit makes it perfect for spilling over the edges of borders, raised beds, or containers where the delicate flowers can be appreciated up close.

Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Origanum thrives in Isle of Wight gardens where sunny conditions and free-draining soils suit it perfectly. ‘Bristol Cross’ is especially good for gravel gardens, raised beds, or warm coastal borders where it can bask in plenty of sunshine.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Dianthus ‘Newport Pink’, low fragrant cushions that enjoy the same dry sunny conditions

  • Salvia ‘Chalk White’, upright white flowers that lift the soft pink tones

  • Stachys byzantina, soft silver foliage that highlights the delicate pink bracts

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Lean, well-drained soil keeps plants compact and encourages the best colour in the flowers, avoid heavy feeding or rich compost.
