Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Red Head'
A superb ornamental grass producing some of the largest and most dramatic bottlebrush flower heads of any pennisetum.
Pennisetum 'Red Head' forms a graceful mound of arching green foliage, topped from late summer by large, fluffy flower spikes that emerge with rich burgundy-red tones before ageing to silvery buff. The impressive flower heads catch the sunlight beautifully and continue to provide interest well into autumn and winter. Their movement in the breeze brings a relaxed, natural feel to borders and wildlife-friendly plantings.
Thriving in full sun and well-drained soil, this robust perennial grass forms a substantial clump without becoming invasive. It is drought tolerant once established and combines particularly well with late-flowering perennials, helping extend the garden season when many summer plants are beginning to fade.
