Penstemon ‘King George’
A classic cottage garden favourite, loved for its rich crimson-red flowers and exceptionally long flowering season.
Penstemon ‘King George’ produces elegant upright stems covered in velvety deep red trumpet-shaped blooms from early summer into autumn. The dramatic flowers stand out beautifully against fresh green foliage and are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Its vivid colouring adds warmth and depth to mixed borders, especially when paired with softer pinks, purples, and silvery foliage.
Thriving in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil, this semi-evergreen perennial forms bushy clumps that flower continuously for months with regular deadheading. It performs particularly well in coastal and milder gardens, making it an excellent choice for many Isle of Wight planting schemes. Like most Penstemons, it dislikes sitting wet through winter and benefits from leaving stems intact until spring.
Specifications:
Height: 75–90cm
Spread: 45–60cm
Flowering: June to October
Position: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Well-drained soil
Maintenance: Low, deadhead regularly and cut back in spring
Note for Isle of Wight planting:
A brilliant performer for sheltered coastal gardens and sunny borders on the Isle of Wight. The bold red flowers hold their colour well even in bright sun and combine beautifully with drought-tolerant perennials and ornamental grasses.
Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range
Salvia ‘Caradonna’, deep purple flower spikes that create a striking contrast with the red blooms
Gaura ‘Passionate Blush’, airy soft pink flowers that lighten the richness of the planting
Achillea ‘Lemon’, warm buttery-yellow flower heads that complement the crimson tones beautifully
Verbena bonariensis, adds height and movement while attracting masses of pollinators
Stipa gigantea, architectural grass that gives a naturalistic feel and catches evening light beautifully
🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Plant near softer pinks, silvers, or grasses to stop the bold red flowers feeling heavy in the border. Regular deadheading will keep fresh flower spikes appearing right into autumn.
