Peony ‘Bowl of Beauty’

A truly classic peony, producing large, elegant blooms with rich pink outer petals and a soft, creamy centre that glows in the garden.

‘Bowl of Beauty’ is one of those peonies people always stop and look at. The flowers are beautifully formed, with bold cerise-pink outer petals surrounding a frilled, pale centre, giving it a slightly softer, more relaxed feel than fully double types. It flowers in late spring into early summer, bringing a real sense of occasion to the garden, and the open form makes it a gentle draw for pollinators as well as being excellent for cutting.

It forms a tidy clump of lush green foliage, reaching around 80cm in height and spread over time. Best grown in full sun or light partial shade, in a deep, fertile soil that holds some moisture but drains well. Like all peonies, it prefers to be left undisturbed once planted, and will reward you with better flowering each year. A little support can help keep the blooms upright, especially in more exposed spots.

Note for Isle of Wight planting
Peonies can do really well on the Isle of Wight with the right positioning. Give them a sunny, sheltered spot and make sure the soil drains well, especially on heavier ground. Avoid planting too deep, and try to keep them away from tree roots where it can get very dry. Shelter from strong coastal winds will help protect those big blooms.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range

  • Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’, soft, billowing blue that contrasts beautifully with the bold peony flowers

  • Salvia ‘Caradonna’, upright purple spires that follow on neatly after the peony finishes

  • Geranium ‘Rozanne’, long-flowering and relaxed, softens the base of the planting

  • Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, adds height and structure behind the rounded peony blooms

  • Erigeron ‘Lavender Lady’, airy and informal, keeps everything feeling light around it

🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Don’t be tempted to plant peonies too deep, that’s the most common reason they don’t flower. Keep the crown just below the surface and let them settle, they really are worth the wait.
