Persicaria capitatum ‘Afghan’

A charming carpet-forming perennial Persicaria ‘Afghan’ spreads low and wide with rounded, mottled foliage and almost constant clusters of tiny pink flower heads from summer right into autumn. Delicate yet showy, it plants easily into groundcover schemes, containers, or brightens gaps in gravel borders.

Despite its dainty appearance, it’s tough as nails — tolerant of poor, well-drained soils, sudden dry spells, and coastal exposure. Pollinators adore it, and its freely seeding habit ensures the display comes back (or self-seeds out) with minimal effort.

Specifications:

  • Height: 10–15 cm

  • Spread: 40–60 cm (forms a lush mat)

  • Flowering: July to October (often until first frost)

  • Position: Full sun to partial shade

  • Soil: Light, well-drained; tolerates chalk, sand, clay, even poor soils

  • Maintenance: Trim back after flowering to tidy; divide every year or two if needed

🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
A perfect fit for the Island’s dry, coastal, or urban gravel beds where maintenance should be minimal but colour counts. Its vagabond nature helps fill in spaces, making it a delightful, low-budget filler that thrives in tough conditions.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Erigeron karvinskianus – whispering daisies that echo the low, spreading habit

  • Achillea millefolium ‘Iceberg’ – subtle contrast in foliage and bloom

  • Sedum ‘Iceberg’ – late-season structure with similar soil preferences

  • Verbena officinalis ‘Bampton’ – tiny flowers, big pollinator draw

  • Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’ – adds visual height and textural lift

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Use it to soften the edges of paths, containers, or raised beds. Allow some seed-drop for gently self-sown charm—but feel free to lift and divide in spring to keep it fresh.
