Physostegia virginiana 'Alba'
A graceful perennial with elegant white flower spikes that bring brightness and vertical interest to the summer border.
Physostegia virginiana 'Alba', commonly known as the Obedient Plant, produces tall spires of pristine white tubular flowers from mid to late summer. The blooms open gradually from the base upwards, creating a long-lasting display that is highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. Its clean white flowers provide a cooling contrast to brighter colours and blend effortlessly into both cottage garden and contemporary planting schemes.
Thriving in full sun or partial shade, this robust perennial forms upright clumps of fresh green foliage and flowers reliably year after year. It enjoys moisture-retentive soil but is adaptable to a range of garden conditions once established. The strong vertical flower spikes add valuable structure amongst softer, more billowing perennials.

Panicum 'Straight Cloud' – airy flower panicles soften the upright white spires
Gaura 'The Bride' – elegant white flowers create a relaxed, naturalistic planting
Verbena bonariensis – transparent purple flowers weave effortlessly through the display
Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' – rich copper-red flowers provide warmth against the crisp white blooms
🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Plant Physostegia 'Alba' towards the middle of a border where its vertical flower spikes can emerge through surrounding perennials. It is particularly effective when repeated in groups of three or more for a stronger visual impact.
