Salvia ‘Black and Blue’
A dramatic, late-summer Salvia with inky stems and vivid cobalt-blue flowers.
The flowers are a real showstopper, deep blue with almost black calyces, giving a rich, velvety look that stands out beautifully in sunny borders and pots. It is loved by bees and other pollinators, and brings a slightly exotic feel without being too fussy.
Best grown in a warm, sheltered sunny spot with free-draining soil. It forms a bushy, upright clump and flowers for months, especially if deadheaded. In colder or wetter gardens it is best treated as borderline hardy, so give it protection over winter or grow it in a pot that can be tucked somewhere sheltered.
Specifications:
Height: 60 to 90cm
Spread: 40 to 60cm
Flowering: July to October
Position: Full sun
Soil: Free-draining soil, avoid winter wet
Maintenance: Deadhead to keep flowering, cut back in spring once new growth appears
Hardiness: Half-hardy to borderline hardy, best with winter protection
Note for Isle of Wight planting
A great choice for warm, sheltered Isle of Wight gardens, especially sunny patios, coastal gardens and free-draining borders. In exposed or heavy clay spots, it will be much happier in a pot or planted with grit added for drainage.
Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range
Gaura ‘The Bride’, airy white flowers to soften the bold blue
Verbena bonariensis, tall, pollinator-friendly and light through the border
Erigeron ‘Lavender Lady’, relaxed edging with long-flowering charm
Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’, soft colour contrast and good drought tolerance
Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, upright grass for movement and structure
🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Plant it somewhere warm and sunny where you can see the dark stems up close, they are half the magic of this Salvia.
