Salvia greggii ‘Bordeaux’
Rich, velvety, and beautifully compact, Salvia ‘Bordeaux’ delivers deep purple-maroon blooms from late spring all the way through to the first frosts. Its dark, aromatic foliage and upright habit make it a standout in sunny borders, raised beds, or container displays.
Highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, ‘Bordeaux’ is both a pollinator favourite and a fantastic choice for extending colour into the autumn months. Drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and floriferous—this is a salvia that performs.
Specifications:
Height: 40–60 cm
Spread: 40–50 cm
Flowering: May to October
Position: Full sun
Soil: Well-drained, light to moderately fertile
Maintenance: Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering. Cut back by half in early spring once the risk of frost has passed
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Thrives in the Island’s sunny, free-draining soils—especially in coastal or sheltered inland gardens. Performs well in gravel gardens, raised planters, or borders that experience drying winds and sea air. Protect from waterlogging over winter.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
• Achillea millefolium ‘Cassis’ – Rich, complementary colouring and strong pollinator draw
• Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ – Autumn structure and soft contrast
• Verbena rigida ‘Oneness’ – Upright clusters of vivid purple to mirror salvia’s height
• Geranium ‘Rozanne’ – Spreading groundcover to fill beneath the airy salvia stems
• Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’ – Adds motion and texture behind the deep blooms
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Pinch out early tips to encourage bushiness and more flowering stems. In colder spots, consider a winter mulch or grow in a pot you can move to shelter.
