Salvia hians

A striking and unusual salvia with large violet-blue flowers that bring bold colour and drama to summer borders.

Salvia hians produces impressive hooded blooms in rich violet-blue, noticeably larger than those of most salvias. The flowers are carried on tall stems above broad green foliage, creating a bold architectural presence in the garden. These nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators throughout summer.

This hardy perennial prefers a sunny or lightly shaded position in fertile, well-drained soil. Over time it forms a substantial clump, making it ideal for the middle or back of a border where its height and striking flowers can really stand out. It combines beautifully with other naturalistic perennials that bring movement and contrast.

Specifications:

  • Type: Hardy perennial

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil

Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Salvia hians grows well in Isle of Wight gardens where soils hold a little moisture but drain freely. Plant it in a sheltered sunny border where it has room to form a generous clump and its flowers can rise above surrounding plants.

Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Cephalaria gigantea, tall airy stems with pale yellow pincushion flowers that bring movement and height

  • Achillea ‘Terracotta’, warm tones that contrast beautifully with the violet-blue flowers

  • Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’, soft lavender-blue flowers loved by pollinators

  • Salvia sclarea ‘Alba’, tall white flower spikes that add structure and lightness

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Give plants a little space to develop, Salvia hians forms a substantial clump over time and looks best when allowed to grow naturally among other tall perennials.
