🌿 Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna’
A garden design favourite, Salvia ‘Caradonna’ is instantly recognisable for its upright, inky-violet flower spikes and striking blackcurrant-purple stems. Flowering from late spring into autumn with a little deadheading, it provides height, structure, and a magnet for bees and butterflies. Drought-tolerant and low-maintenance once established, it’s a brilliant addition to any sunny border or gravel garden.
The foliage releases a gentle scent when brushed, and its neat clumping habit makes it ideal for repeated planting through schemes.
Specifications:
Height: 50–70cm
Spread: 40–50cm
Flowering: May to October
Position: Full sun
Soil: Free-draining, moderately fertile soil
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Caradonna thrives in the island’s sunny, breezy conditions. It excels in coastal borders, raised beds, or gravel planting, needing very little water once settled. Avoid winter wet by ensuring good drainage and leaving top growth over winter to protect the crown.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
1. Achillea millefolium ‘Terracotta’
The earthy tones of Achillea bring out the richness of Caradonna’s violet spikes and flower through similar months.
2. Verbena bonariensis
Combines height and movement with an ethereal haze of flowers above and through the salvias.
3. Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’
The vibrant tangerine blooms contrast beautifully with Salvia’s cooler tones for a dynamic summer combo.
4. Geranium ‘Rozanne’
Ground-hugging and long-flowering, this geranium fills gaps while echoing purple tones.
5. Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’
Delicate, arching flower heads soften the formality of Caradonna and bring late-summer movement.
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Deadhead regularly for repeat flowering, and cut back hard in early spring once new growth is visible. Divide every few years to rejuvenate and multiply.
