🌿 Salvia ‘Royal Bumble’

With its bold crimson flowers and near-black calyces, Salvia ‘Royal Bumble’ makes a dramatic statement from late spring through to the first frosts. Compact, upright, and floriferous, this standout cultivar adds vivid contrast to borders, gravel gardens, and containers—drawing in bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in abundance.

Its aromatic foliage and neat habit make it easy to work into both formal and naturalistic planting schemes, while its extended flowering season ensures long-lasting interest.

Specifications:

  • Height: 60–75cm

  • Spread: 45–60cm

  • Flowering: May to November

  • Position: Full sun

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile

  • Maintenance: Deadhead to prolong flowering. In early spring, cut back hard once frosts have passed to encourage fresh, bushy regrowth.

🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Perfect for coastal borders and sunny sheltered spots across the Island. Salvia ‘Royal Bumble’ is well-suited to the dry summers and mild winters of the Isle of Wight, especially in raised beds, gravel gardens, or courtyard planters. Mulch in autumn to help guard against winter wet in heavier soils.

🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:

  • Achillea millefolium ‘Paprika’ – Hot-hued, flat-topped blooms for a vibrant, pollinator-rich combo

  • Geranium ‘Rozanne’ – Cool contrast with trailing habit to soften the upright salvia stems

  • Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’ – Adds graceful motion and lightness to balance the salvia’s richness

  • Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ – Strong autumn structure with a shared love of sunny, dry conditions

  • Verbena rigida ‘Oneness’ – Deep colour and a low-growing pollinator boost to echo ‘Royal Bumble’

🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
For the strongest display, plant in threes and combine with silver-foliage companions for contrast. Excellent in wildlife-friendly borders where visual impact and ecological value go hand in hand.
