Salvia uliginosa
A graceful late-flowering salvia with clouds of clear sky-blue flowers that bring colour and pollinators to the garden well into autumn.
Salvia uliginosa, often known as the Bog Sage, produces elegant sprays of pure sky-blue flowers from late summer until the first frosts. The blooms are carried on tall, airy stems that seem to float above the surrounding planting, creating a light and natural effect. Bees, bumblebees and butterflies flock to the nectar-rich flowers, making it one of the most valuable late-season plants for pollinators.
Despite its common name, Salvia uliginosa is remarkably adaptable and thrives in most garden soils that do not dry out completely. It forms a vigorous clump of fresh green foliage and can quickly create an impressive presence in the border. Its transparent habit allows it to weave beautifully through neighbouring plants, making it ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife borders and naturalistic planting schemes.

Note for Isle of Wight Planting
Salvia uliginosa performs exceptionally well in the Isle of Wight's mild climate, often flowering into late autumn. It appreciates moisture-retentive soil but will cope with drier conditions once established. In sheltered coastal gardens it can become a real standout feature, producing months of colour when many other perennials are fading.
Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range
Panicum 'Straight Cloud' – airy flower heads and upright habit complement the salvia's relaxed form
Pennisetum 'Red Head' – soft bottlebrush flowers provide beautiful contrast in late summer
Verbena bonariensis – creates a naturalistic haze of blue and purple tones
Symphyotrichum 'Barr's Blue' – extends the late-season pollinator display
Sanguisorba 'Tanna' – rich burgundy flowers add contrast and movement
Gaura 'The Bride' – delicate white flowers soften the planting and prolong interest
🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Allow Salvia uliginosa plenty of space to weave through neighbouring plants rather than staking it rigidly. Its airy stems look most beautiful when supported naturally by surrounding perennials and grasses
