Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’
A graceful and long-flowering perennial with deep crimson bottlebrush flowers dancing above neat green foliage.
Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’ produces masses of rich burgundy-red flower heads held on slender wiry stems from mid summer well into autumn. The flowers sway beautifully in the breeze, adding movement and a naturalistic feel to borders while attracting pollinators throughout the season. Its airy habit allows it to weave effortlessly through surrounding planting without overwhelming neighbouring plants.
Thriving in sun or light shade, this hardy perennial forms tidy clumps of attractive divided foliage and performs best in moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Compared to taller Sanguisorbas, ‘Tanna’ stays more compact and manageable, making it ideal for smaller borders and contemporary prairie-style planting schemes. It is reliable, easy to grow, and returns strongly each year.
Specifications:
Height: 60–90cm
Spread: 45–60cm
Flowering: July to October
Position: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Moist but well-drained soil
Maintenance: Low, cut back faded stems in late winter or early spring
Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Performs particularly well in Isle of Wight gardens where soils do not dry out excessively in summer. A lovely choice for softening sunny borders and adding movement amongst drought-tolerant perennials and grasses.
Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range
Verbena bonariensis, airy purple flowers that echo the transparent habit beautifully
Gaura ‘Passionate Blush’, delicate pink flowers that soften the dark crimson tones
Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’, long-flowering lavender-blue flowers loved by pollinators
Molinia caerulea, upright grass that adds movement and complements the naturalistic style
Achillea ‘Lilac Beauty’, soft flat flower heads that contrast beautifully with the rounded blooms
🌟 The Green Standard Tip
Plant Sanguisorba where the evening light can catch the flower stems, the delicate flower heads seem to float above surrounding planting and create a wonderfully natural meadow-like effect.
