🌿 Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’
(Small Burnet)
Compact, graceful, and quietly architectural, Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’ offers delicate movement and understated charm. Its deep crimson, drumstick-like flowers rise above neat mounds of finely cut foliage from midsummer into early autumn. Bees and butterflies love its nectar-rich blooms, while gardeners value its ability to weave through plantings without overwhelming its neighbours.
Unlike its taller cousins, ‘Tanna’ stays tidy and well-behaved — perfect for front-of-border structure or gravel garden texture.
Specifications:
Height: 40–60cm
Spread: 30–45cm
Flowering: July to September
Position: Full sun to light shade
Soil: Moist but well-drained; prefers humus-rich loam or improved clay
🌿 Note for Isle of Wight planting:
Suits the island’s mild climate well — particularly in breezy coastal locations or woodland-edge gardens. Avoid waterlogged soil in winter. Its compact nature makes it ideal for island gardens with limited space or exposed spots needing soft vertical accents.
🌿 Ideal Companion Plants from The Green Standard Range:
1. Geranium sanguineum
Low, spreading growth echoes Tanna’s fine foliage and provides long-flowering ground cover.
2. Salvia ‘Caradonna’
Deep violet spires and upright form contrast beautifully with the rounded, nodding blooms of Tanna.
3. Achillea millefolium ‘Wild White Form’
Adds softness and structure with cool, flat flower heads that support beneficial insects.
4. Pennisetum orientale ‘Flamingo’
A beautiful pairing for texture and movement, sharing a love of sunny, free-draining conditions.
5. Verbena officinalis ‘Bampton’
Wispy, dark-stemmed flowers complement Tanna’s subtle drama and encourage season-long pollinator traffic.
🌟 The Green Standard Tip:
Deadhead to extend flowering, or let the seed heads mature for late-season interest. Divide every few years in early spring to reinvigorate and share with friends — Tanna is one of those quietly loved plants that everyone wants once they see it in bloom.
